The Gilded Age mansions of Newport, Rhode Island have long attracted tourists, ever since the original family owners sold them or otherwise turned them over to non-profits to be operated as museums during the mid-1900s. But it is only recently that these former "summer cottages" began being decorated for Christmas. The social season in turn-of-the-20th-century Newport extended onlyi through the summer months and the mansions were essentially closed for the remainder of the year. But during the last quarter of the 20th century, the museum operators recognized an opportunity the original owners never considered - outfitting these fabulous homes for Christmas!
