Honoring a pioneer in historic bridge preservation

November 6, 2018

IN MEMORY: Eric Delony, a pioneer in historic bridge preservation, passed away on October 23, 2018. See an earlier post in International Heritage News honoring him below (originally posted February 2, 2017).

ORIGINAL POST: Eric Delony was a long-time staff member of the US National Park Service in their Historic American Engineering Survey (HAER), now part of the NPS' Heritage Documentation Program. In that position, Mr. Delony recognized the importance of the history of engineering, particularly with regard to historic bridges. His documentation efforts and advocacy led to greatly increased protection for historic bridges across the United States and even across the world, as Mr. Delony annually (1984-2003) hosted international exchange scholars through a program run by the US National Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (US/ICOMOS). Mr. Delony was recently honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Bridgehunters' Chronicles Othmar H. Amman Awards.
