The Old City of Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful cities on earth, situated on the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia hugging the Adriatic Sea. When the country of Yugoslavia broke apart in 1991, the city sustained heavy damage from the military conflict that followed. But extensive and successful restoration efforts turned this World Heritage city (listed in 1979) into one of the major tourist destinations in the Mediterranean region (photo by Poco a poco, shared here under CA-BY-SA 3.0) . Although the city historically gained financial success from the maritime trade, the current tourism trade is causing some—including the new mayor of Dubrovnik—to question the toll of the cruise industry on the quality of life for the city’s residents.
