Modern Lebanon and the ancient Canaanites—what DNA analysis reveals

Sidon, Lebanon

Canaan, an area covering much of what is today Israel, was the site of much of what is recorded in the Hebrew Bible and is an area rich in history and archaeology. The Lebanese Republic, or Lebanon, is the modern-day country that was the home of people known as the ancient Canaanites. Recent DNA analysis of specimens recovered from Bronze Age burials at an archaeological site in Sidon, Lebanon, a coastal city, reveals striking similarities between the ancient and modern populations.
