Now you can own a (large) piece of Palm Spring’s midcentury modern heritage

Although the city had settlement earlier, Palm Springs, California did not become a fashionable resort until the early 1900s. Initially, those with ailments that many felt could be cured with the dry heat visited the desert city as new hotels were being constructed to accommodate these “health tourists.” Located just over 100 miles east of Los Angeles, however, during the 1930s the city became increasingly popular with the newly minted movie stars as the Hollywood film industry grew. In fact, one of the popular spots for celebrity estates was, and is, known as the Movie Colony neighborhood.

Following World War II, the popularity of Palm Springs continued to grow, with many new estates designed by some of the best-known architects of midcentury modern design, including Richard Neutra. Today, Palm Springs is particularly noted for its rich collection of midcentury modern buildings, hosting a modernism week annually that attracts thousands. Now, a huge property designed by Howard Lapham, and also located in the Movie Colony neighborhood, is for sale.
