Brutalist architecture has its share of detractors, but a renewed push for the preservation of mid-century Modern architecture has helped lead to a resurgence in interest amongst architects, architectural historians and other concerned citizens. Recently, attempts to “upgrade” the brutalist-styled subway stations in Washington, DC (pictured) by painting the raw concrete surfaces white led to a sustained uproar. In Poplar, an East London neighborhood, a 1960s brutalist-style housing complex was the subject of a preservation campaign beginning in 2008, but to no avail. A redevelopment plan approved in 2012 calls for its demolition. See the property through this dramatic drone footage.
