Biosphere Reserves—gain some, lose some, particularly in the United States

The International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Programme recently held meetings in Paris. According to UNESCO, Biosphere Reserves are “learning places for sustainable development whose aim is to reconcile biodiversity conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources.” During the meetings, 23 new reserves were added, but the Programme also responds to state party requests to remove reserves.  This year, 3 sites in Bulgaria were removed and 17 of the 47 biosphere reserves in the United States were removed.
