The members of the Vanderbilt family of New York City was unparalleled in their approach to personal housing. With a fortune built on steam freight and railroads in the second half of the 19th century, various family members financed the construction of some of the most elaborate private residences and "cottages" the US has ever known. Many people may be familiar with The Breakers, in Newport, Rhode Island, and Biltmore, in Asheville, North Carolina, both of which are open to the public as historic house museums. Yet the Vanderbilts also built a string of mansions along New York City's Fifth Avenue, most of which were subsequently demolished. The last such property with ties to the Vanderbilt in NYC is now for sale.
