Beijing is known as the last of the four great ancient capitals of China, dating back more than 800 years. Today, the city has seven World Heritage sites, including the Forbidden City and parts of the Great Wall. While the city's intense pollution recently has provided numerous headlines, this writer looks at the efforts to restore and preserve many of the remaining historic monuments.
