This Place Matters? A National Trust contest brings out questionable tactics

Newport, Rhode Island has numerous historic sites, including the oldest synagogue in America, a colonial seaport village, and gilded age mansions. Competing priorities for scarce preservation dollars is not a new thing, but it reached a particularly peculiar place during a grant contest sponsored by the US National Trust for Historic Preservation as part of its "This Place Matters" Community Challenge. Did the tactics used by the Preservation Society of Newport County go too far?
