Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site is located across the Mississippi River from the modern city of St. Louis. Designated a World Heritage Site in 1982, Cahokia was once one of the largest cities in the world. The site today contains more than 100 earthen mounds of various sizes and shapes. This writer ventured to Cahokia to learn why the city was suddenly abandoned more than half a century ago.
