Islam's holiest city faces historic threat from development

Mecca is known as the birthplace of Muhammad and the site of Muhammad's first revelation of the Quran, leading to it becoming a place of pilgrimage for millions of Muslims each year. In order to accommodate the huge influx of pilgrims, extensive development has resulted in the destruction of historic architecture, a problem that continues to grow with new development underway.
