Tips for getting the most out of museum visits

On a post-college "grand tour" of Europe, my friend and I were faced with the daunting task of only 3 hours at the Louvre, due to obviously bad planning. We raced through to see the Mona Lisa and a few other iconic pieces before we left the museum and hopped on a train from Paris to Barcelona. On the train, my friend was outraged to learn the Louvre also housed the Venus de Milo, which we had missed. Years later, when I visited the British Museum in London, I was prepared—the Parthenon Marbles and the Rosetta Stone before I saw anything else.
