The Kassena people first settled this area of Africa in the 15th century. Despite the country's poverty, a rich part of their cultural tradition is decorating the earthen architecture with elaborate designs. The capital city of Tiébélé was placed on the World Monuments Fund Watch List in 2012 to help promote the beauty and cultural importance of the painted houses and help lead to their preservation.
