What is the "worth" of World Heritage status?

The World Heritage Convention seeks to promote the protection of natural and cultural sites of outstanding universal value. Yet, while inscription on the World Heritage List promotes sites to the public, and often to a significant increase in tourism, the Convention itself, nor the World Heritage Centre that administers it, provides much in the way of funding. This author looks at the question of the value of World Heritage status for cultural sites
