The Kimberley region of Western Australia is today extremely remote. Although it was the earliest region settled in Australia, today the population is sparsely distributed across a number of very small towns. Today numerous efforts are underway to protect the largely unspoiled wilderness reserves, which also contain numerous examples of rock art, including the "haunting, elongated human forms known as Gwion figures."
