Many of the historic textile mills of New England in he United States have been repurposed for the modern economy. Lowell, Massachusetts, was the heart of the textile industry in the mid-19th century; today, many of the former mills form the centerpiece of Lowell National Historic Park. In Pawtucket, Rhode island, the former mills are being turned over to contemporary artists.
