Automobile tourism and the US National Park System

As part of the centennial celebration of the US National Park System, this author compiled a beautifully illustrated historical account of the 5,500-mile road system constructed throughout the most iconic landscapes of the American park system. Although some opposed the extension of a network of roads into these landscapes, others felt that providing easier access into the national parks would be a key to their success.
