What makes a monument universally recognized?

The pyramids? The Taj Mahal? The Great Wall of China? Why are these sites universally recognized over many centuries and many cultures? Artist Michael Heizer has for some years been attempting to answer this question through the construction of a large sculpture called “City” in Nevada.
