The U.S. Capitol, which stands on a hill at the eastern end of the National Mall in Washington, DC, was completed in 1800, although the building complex has been greatly expanded since then. Its cast iron dome was not added until 1850. Recently, the dome has been subjected to extensive restoration and repair work, which is now nearing completion.
