Venice in danger? Not according to the Italian government

The World Heritage List conveys an honorific designation on some of the most important natural and cultural heritage assets across the globe. While the designation does not place any direct protections on these sites, removal of a site from the list can cause great international embarrassment to the host country. This summer, efforts to place Venice on the World Heritage in Danger List to help promote support for protecting the popular tourist destination met with great, and successful, political resistance.
