Flooded with tourists

Venice, Italy

The Venice Committee for the International Fund for Monuments initiated its efforts to protect the extraordinary heritage of Venice in 1966 following extensive flooding. In 1971, the committee organized itself as a dedicated non-profit organization called Save Venice, and in 1985 the original Venice Committee became the World Monuments Fund. Despite decades of these efforts, today Venice is threatened by an ever increasing number of tourists in addition to rising sea levels due to climate change.
