Wayfinders in Central Park

New York City’s Central Park was established in 1857, opened to the in 1858, and was expanded to its current size in 1873. The park is perhaps best known for the intricate landscape design by Frederick Law Olmsted and his partner Calvert Vaux. Although the park soon fell into decline, after the turn of the 20th century the new mayor Fiorello La Guardia in 1934 tasked Robert Moses with rehabilitating the park.

Numerous of the original cast iron lamp posts installed in Central Park in 1911 still survive, and a little known feature can help visitors find their way around.
