Joara—“one of the largest Native American towns in western North Carolina”

Archaeologists working in western North Carolina are exploring an important Native American village, the residents of which successfully resisted an incursion by Spanish explorers in the 16th century. A local college regularly sponsors “dig days” to allow those interested to participate in the excavations.
