Archaeologists from the American University in Beirut have been excavating one of the earliest known cities, near the ancient port city of Byblos in northern Lebanon. The site’s extensive preservation is due in part to the simple fact that no building has been constructed here for nearly 5,000 years. Now, however, its location near the rapidly developing Mediterranean coast of Lebanon has exposed the site to new threats.
