Biking past ballrooms and battlefields

The Commonwealth of Virginia has some of the most historic land in the United States, from Powhatan’s seat of power at Werowocomoco to the first permanent English settlement at Jamestown to the colonial capital at restored Williamsburg. In the 18th century, the James River was lined with plantations, and many of the great houses are open to the public today. In the mid-19th century, Virginia saw some of the most intense battles during the U.S. Civil War. Recently the Virginia Capital Train opened as a 52-mile long hiking and biking corridor from Richmond to Jamestown.
