A new island park at Pier 55 in New York City
The success of New York’s High Line, which converted aging rail infrastructure to enormously popular urban park, has led others to look for ways to expand on its success. While Manhattan’s historic role as a center of shipping has lessened in recent years, a number of the remaining piers have been repurposed for New York’s land-based population (Chelsea Piers comes to mind). Now, plans for a new urban “island” park on Pier 55 have received the final go-ahead from the courts.
