Crozet Tunnel –“A modern marvel” (in 1858)

As railroads expanded in the mid-19th century, Claudius Crozet designed and oversaw the construction of a tunnel through the Blue Ridge Mountains in central Virginia that was technologically advanced for its time. Completed in 1858, the train tunnel remained in operation until 1944. Now it has been rediscovered and is being repurposed as a recreational site for bikers and hikers and general tourists.
