Built in 1966 in Los Angeles, California, the Century Plaza Hotel was conceived as the centerpiece of a large, new development—Century City—on land purchased from the film studio 20th Century Fox. The hotel, designed by Minoru Yamasaki, became the locus of numerous high-profile events and the temporary home of numerous celebrities, including President Ronald Reagan. Initial plans to demolish the hotel as part of a large-scale redevelopment in Century City were scuttled by preservation activists. Now the redevelopment plans include restoration of the hotel.
