The Glasgow School of Art was founded in 1845 as the Glasgow School of Design. In 1897, the school began construction of a new Art Nouveau building designed by local renowned architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh. In May of 2014, a disastrous fire destroyed about half of the original Mackintosh-designed building together with much of the student art housed within it in preparation for the Degree Show. After several years of planning, restoration of the building is about to commence.
