When European settlers first encountered the shores of what is now Virginia in the United States, they found a powerful confederacy with this town as its capital in what is now Tidewater Virginia. Archaeological excavations over the last decade, “the precise location of which was uncertain until 2003,” have revealed this site to have been an extraordinary “place o power” ruled by Powhatan, leader of this Algonquin tribe. The site will soon be managed and interpreted by the National Park Service with in partnership with numerous other US and Native American groups.
